  • Connecting Lumos to the laptop
  • Turn on Processing Settings
  • Select Bidirectional Scanning under Scan Mode

What Is Uni-directional vs. Bi-directional Scanning?

  • Uni-directional scanning: The laser head engraves only in one direction (e.g. left to right), then returns without engraving.

  • Bi-directional scanning: The laser head engraves in both directions (left to right and right to left), improving speed.

Recommended Scanning Mode Based on Your Goal:

Objective Recommended Mode WHY
Maximize speed/efficiency Bi-directional Faster engraving in both directions
Color consistency Uni-directional More stable laser energy and heat; reduces color banding
High-quality color engraving Uni-directional Better detail and color accuracy, especially for gradient or array
Engraving on black materials Uni-directional Bi-directional can cause slight ghosting or blur on edges
Simple monochrome engraving Bi-directional Ideal if speed matters more than precision
Soft or heat-sensitive materials Uni-directional Reduces heat buildup and risk of warping or burning
